Fill Over Sand

The soil survey from USDA NRCS maps Arents-Urban land complex, organic substratum, at the ZIP's center point. Arents are soils made of material that people have moved and spread, and "organic substratum" means a buried layer of organic matter lies under that fill. The survey counts 40 percent of the map unit as urban land, paved or built on.[1]

The only named natural series in the unit is Immokalee, at 5 percent. The top mineral layer is fine sand, rated poorly drained, in hydrologic group B/D, meaning the soil acts like group D when the water table is high and like group B where it has been drained. Shrink-swell in the top 100 cm is low, at 1.5 percent linear extensibility.[1]

Below that, the USGS state geologic compilation shows the Anastasia Formation, a Pleistocene unit of sand and limestone. The ground at the center point sits 20 feet above sea level by the USGS elevation service. For any yard project, what counts is the fill and sand in the top few feet, and how close the water sits below it.[2],[3]

Rain Without Frost

West Palm Beach Intl AP, FL, about 3 miles from the ZIP, is the nearest NOAA normals station. It averages 61.8 inches of precipitation a year. In a normal year that airport logs 0 days with a low of 32 F or colder.[4]

No frost means no heave, so gravel and pavers stay where they are put as long as water does not undermine them. Heavy rain in short bursts is the bigger worry. With 61.8 inches a year falling at the airport, fine sand that is left loose on a slope or at the edge of a drive will move when a downpour hits.[4]

Planting can happen all year here. Mulch does a different job than in cold places: it shades the sand, keeps moisture in through hot spells, and stops heavy rain from splashing soil onto walls and walks. A thick layer, kept topped up, pays off in fewer weeds and less watering.[4]

Building a Drive on Filled Sand

Filled ground can be uneven. One part of a lot may be firm, another may hide a soft pocket over the organic layer below. Before building a drive or pad, probe the area with a steel rod and dig out any soft spots, replacing them with compacted Fill Sand. Then lay a woven fabric over the whole subgrade.[1]

A base of #57 Crushed Stone, compacted in lifts, drains quickly on poorly drained fine sand. A top layer of Road Base or Crushed Concrete packs into a firm, smooth surface. For a lighter, more decorative look, finish with 3/8" Crushed Stone or #89 Crushed Stone, which pack well and suit the tropical planting common in the area.[1]

The Florida Department of Transportation uses Graded Aggregate Base, in Section 204 of its Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction (FY 2026-27). Highway crews build on a graded, compacted course of rock, and a home drive on soft sand gains the same strength from a thick, well-packed base.[5]

Condos, Apartments and Townhomes

In ZIP 33401 the Census Bureau counts 19,841 housing units, and 19 percent are detached single-family houses. The median home in the ZIP was built in 1992. Owners live in 37 percent of the occupied homes.[6]

West Palm Beach as a whole has 62,464 housing units, 38 percent of them detached, with a median year built of 1988. A dense ZIP like this one sends a lot of orders from building managers and associations: mulch for shared beds, River Rock for strips beside parking areas, and sand for courtyard play spaces. Small loads and tight drop spots are common.[6]

Water Away From the Building

With a high water table and heavy rain, keeping water away from foundations is the main drainage task. A trench filled with Drain Rock and lined with fabric catches runoff along a wall and leads it to a lower spot or a storm drain. A splash bed of River Rock under each downspout keeps roof water from digging into the sand.[1],[4]

Fine sand drains well once it has a place to send water, but on poorly drained ground there may be little room below. In that case, move the water sideways instead of down. Shallow, rock-lined swales across a yard guide runoff to the street without needing a deep trench.[1]

Where a seawall, canal edge or ditch bank faces moving water, Riprap holds the slope against erosion. A layer of 1-1/2" Crushed Gravel between the sand and the big stone acts as a filter so the sand does not wash out between the rocks.[1]

Plants, Rock and Path Stones

Plants in fine sand dry out fast and run short on nutrients. Mix Compost or Garden Soil into planting holes and beds to hold water near the roots. Raised beds work well too, especially where the water table is close to the surface after rain.[1]

Rock-and-plant yards are popular because they need little care. River Rock and Pea Gravel make clean borders and paths. #89 Crushed Stone gives a tidy, small-chip surface between planters. Fabric under the rock keeps weeds down and stops the sand from mixing in.[1]

For mulch, Red Mulch and Black Shredded Mulch hold their color well in strong sun. Brown Shredded Mulch and Wood Chips look more natural around palms and shrubs. Keep mulch a few inches from trunks and stems, and refresh it as it breaks down in the heat and humidity.[4]

Two small stones come up again and again for walks and courtyards in this ZIP. Pea Gravel is round, smooth and easy on bare feet, which suits pool surrounds and garden paths. 3/8" Crushed Stone has sharp faces that lock together, so it moves less under a chair leg or a bike tire and keeps a cleaner line along an edge.[1]

On poorly drained fine sand, both drain well on their own, but neither can push water down into a high water table. Give the path a slight crown or a cross slope and let it shed into a bed or a swale. Fabric under the stone keeps the sand from rising into it, so the path stays crisp for years.[1]

For a path that has to carry a wheelbarrow or a golf cart, the crushed stone wins. For a quiet garden walk that people mostly cross barefoot, Pea Gravel feels better. Many owners use both: crushed stone on the working route from the drive to the back gate, and Pea Gravel in the sitting area beside the plants.[1]

Sand has its own uses in a sandy town. Playground Sand is washed and soft for a play corner, Concrete Sand sets pavers, and Mason Sand fills tight joints between flagstones. Native fine sand may look similar, but bagged-quality washed grades pack and drain more evenly than whatever came out of a trench.[1]

Frequently Asked Questions

What base works on sandy, filled ground in West Palm Beach?

Probe for soft spots first and replace them with compacted Fill Sand. Lay a woven fabric, then build up #57 Crushed Stone in compacted layers, with a cap of Road Base or Crushed Concrete for a firm surface. The fill at the ZIP's center point sits over a buried organic layer, so checking for soft pockets matters.

How do I stop rain from washing out my gravel?

Give the stone a firm edge, shape the surface so water runs off, and send runoff to a Drain Rock trench or a rock-lined swale. Angular stone such as 3/8" Crushed Stone or #89 Crushed Stone stays in place better than round Pea Gravel. With 61.8 inches of yearly precipitation at the airport, drainage is worth planning from the start.

Which rock looks best in a low-care front yard?

River Rock gives smooth, rounded stones for borders and dry creek beds. Pea Gravel makes soft paths, and #89 Crushed Stone gives a neat, small-chip look. Lay fabric under all of them so weeds stay down and the sand does not work up into the rock. Leave planting pockets with Garden Soil for palms and shrubs.

What goes under pavers on fine sand?

Remove loose fill, compact the subgrade, and lay fabric. Build a base of Road Base compacted in thin layers, then set pavers on a smooth bed of Concrete Sand. A slight slope away from the building keeps water out from under the patio. Sand-swept joints help lock the pavers together.

Which mulch holds its color in strong sun?

Red Mulch and Black Shredded Mulch keep their color longer than natural brown mulch in full sun. Brown Shredded Mulch and Wood Chips fade to a softer tone that many people prefer around palms. Whatever you pick, keep a thick layer and top it up as it breaks down in the heat.
