The ground and weather in Boca Raton
Reworked fill over limestone
The USDA soil survey maps Udorthents, 2 to 35 percent slopes, at the center point of ZIP 33428. Udorthents are soils that have been dug up, moved or piled, usually as fill for roads, building pads, berms and canal banks. The wide slope range reflects that shaping, from flat pads to steep mounded edges.[1]
The named soil series in the map unit is Riviera, which makes up 5 percent of it. Riviera is a poorly drained fine sand in hydrologic group A/D: it acts like group D while the water table is high and like group A where the ground is drained. Sand like that lets water through easily, and the problem is the water table below.[1]
Shrink-swell in the top 100 cm is low, at 1.5 percent. Sand does not swell or crack, so slabs and pavers stay level as long as the base under them stays firm and dry.[1]
Fill varies from load to load, so two spots a short walk apart can behave very differently. One corner of a yard may drain in minutes while another holds a puddle for days, depending on what was placed there when the lot was built.[1]
The USGS state geologic map shows Miami Limestone at the center point, a Pleistocene unit of limestone and sandstone. Porous limestone of this kind can hold and move groundwater freely, which helps keep the water table close to the surface.[2]
At the center point, the ground lies just 10 feet above sea level.[3]
Heavy rain and no frost
Weather normals for ZIP 33428 come from the NOAA station at Pompano Beach Airpark, FL, about 10 miles away. It averages 55.6 inches of precipitation a year, much of it in short, intense storms.[4]
The Pompano Beach station logs 0 days a year with a low at or below 32 F. Frost heave plays no part in choosing stone here.[4]
Without frost, the choice between materials comes down to drainage, looks and heat. Light-colored stone stays cooler under summer sun than dark millings, which matters around pools and play areas.[4]
Water drives most choices here. Heavy rain on fine sand over a high water table can leave yards, drives and walks under standing water, and a gravel surface at grade can sit wet for days. Every project starts by deciding how high to build and where the water goes.[1],[4]
Strong storms also bring wind-driven rain that pounds loose mulch and small stone off beds and onto walks. Heavier materials, firm edging and good grading all help.[4]
Storm season brings the heaviest rain, while the drier months can leave sandy beds parched. Plan irrigation and mulch for the dry stretch and drainage for the wet one.[4]
Raising and draining a drive
Build the drive up above the surrounding yard with compacted Fill Sand or Fill Dirt so the base sits above the wettest zone. Crown the surface so rain runs off both sides.[1]
Lay woven fabric over the compacted fill, since fine sand shifts under load and swallows stone. Compact Road Base or Crushed Concrete in thin lifts, then top with Driveway Gravel or 3/4" Crushed Stone. Pea Gravel rolls on sand and belongs on paths, not drives.[1]
Asphalt Millings pack firmly in South Florida heat and make a dark, low-dust surface for a long drive or a side parking pad. Swales along the edges, lined with #57 Crushed Stone or Drain Rock, catch runoff and let it soak away.[4]
On fill ground, check for soft pockets before building. Probe with a steel rod and dig out anything that sinks, then refill with compacted Road Base.[1]
Stone Dust Screenings make a good finish for walkways beside a drive. They pack firm over Road Base, drain well when crowned and look clean against light pavers and stucco walls.[1]
Crushed Concrete makes a strong base on fill. Its angular pieces lock tightly, and once compacted over fabric it holds its shape through the wet season as well as Road Base does.[1]
Water around the house
With 55.6 inches of rain a year at the station, drainage stone is worth planning for. A French drain of Drain Rock or #57 Crushed Stone around a perforated pipe moves water from foundations to a swale, a canal bank or a low corner of the lot.[1],[4]
Where the whole lot sits low, raising walks, patios and beds works better than trenching. Topsoil graded away from the house helps lawns shed water.[1]
Limestone near the surface can make digging slow. Where a trench meets rock, a shallower, wider trench filled with Drain Rock moves the same water without breaking into the limestone.[2]
River Rock under downspouts stops splash erosion in fine sand. Riprap protects the bank of a canal or retention pond where moving water would otherwise cut it away.[1]
Beds and lawns in fine sand
Fine sand holds little organic matter or water. Garden Soil in raised beds gives plants a richer root zone, and Compost mixed into existing beds helps the sand hold nutrients and moisture between storms.[1]
Mulch keeps beds even. Brown Shredded Mulch, Black Shredded Mulch and Red Mulch hold moisture in dry spells and block weeds. Shredded mulch stays put in heavy rain better than loose chips.[4]
Plants that tolerate wet feet do best in the lowest beds, and raised planters suit the rest. A layer of Drain Rock at the bottom of a deep planter keeps roots out of standing water after a downpour.[1]
Decorative stone suits many South Florida yards. River Rock and Pea Gravel make low-care beds around palms and shrubs, and Decomposed Granite or Stone Dust Screenings form firm paths. Playground Sand fills a sandbox, and Wood Chips cover a play area.[1]
Homes in ZIP 33428
ZIP 33428 sits in Palm Beach County. The Census counts 18,129 housing units in the ZIP, and 48 percent are detached single-family houses.[5]
The median home in ZIP 33428 was built in 1987, and owners live in 67 percent of the occupied homes.[5]
Boca Raton as a whole counts 49,128 housing units, with detached houses at 42 percent. The city's median year built is 1983.[5]
Owners live in most occupied homes in ZIP 33428, and many projects are refreshes: new mulch, a cleaned-up stone bed or a regraded side yard that drains better.[5]
Detached houses make up a slightly larger share of homes in the ZIP than across the city, and those yards bring most of the drive, drainage and bed work.[5]
FDOT sets Graded Aggregate Base in Section 204 of its Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction for the base under state roads.[6]

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I keep a gravel drive dry in Boca Raton?
Raise it above the yard with compacted Fill Sand, lay woven fabric, compact Road Base or Crushed Concrete and crown the surface. Swales of Drain Rock along the sides catch runoff. The Pompano Beach station averages 55.6 inches of precipitation a year, so height and drainage matter most.
Why does my yard flood after storms?
The ground at the center point of ZIP 33428 sits just 10 feet above sea level on porous limestone, and the Riviera fine sand mapped there is poorly drained. Raise beds and walks, grade Topsoil away from the house, and use Drain Rock trenches where a lower outlet exists.
What stone works best in sandy beds?
River Rock and Pea Gravel make low-care beds, laid over fabric so they do not sink into the sand. For paths, Decomposed Granite or Stone Dust Screenings compact into a firm surface. Edge every bed so the stone stays out of the lawn.
Do I need to plan for frost under pavers?
No. The Pompano Beach station records 0 days a year with a low at or below 32 F. Plan for water instead: raise the paver area, compact Road Base over fabric, screed Concrete Sand and slope away from the house.
What mulch holds up in heavy rain?
Shredded mulch knits together and stays put better than loose chips. Brown Shredded Mulch, Black Shredded Mulch and Red Mulch all work. Edge the beds and keep the mulch a little below the edging, so heavy rain cannot float it out onto walks.
