Clay That Moves With the Seasons
The USDA soil survey maps the center point of ZIP 76541 in Lewisville silty clay, 1 to 3 percent slopes. Lewisville is the main series, making up 85 percent of the map unit, and its top mineral layer is a silty clay.[1]
The shrink-swell rating in the top 100 cm is high, 7.5 percent. In a wet spell the clay takes up water and expands, and in a dry summer it shrinks and opens wide cracks. Slabs, walks and stone edges laid straight on it can lift, tilt and settle as the moisture changes.[1]
Under the soil, the USGS state geologic map shows Walnut Clay, an Early Cretaceous unit of limestone and shale. Weathered shale and limestone like this produce the heavy clay found across much of the area, and a deep dig may reach harder rock in places.[2]
Movement in the clay is the main threat to a gravel surface here. A thick, compacted base spreads the load and evens out the small rises and dips the clay produces from one season to the next.[1]
Well Drained but Slow to Soak
The survey rates Lewisville as well drained, and places it in hydrologic group C, slow infiltration. Water does not sit for long in the profile, but it soaks in slowly at the surface, so a hard rain tends to run off rather than sink in.[1]
That runoff is what washes out drive edges and carves channels along fence lines. Shape every surface so water leaves it evenly, and give concentrated flow, such as from a downspout or a slope, a defined path lined with River Rock or a trench of Drain Rock.[1]
Keeping moisture even under a slab or a patio also limits movement. Gutters that empty well away from the edge, and a gentle slope away from the house, keep the clay beneath from swinging between soaked and dry.[1]
Weather at the Killeen Station
The NOAA normals station at Killeen, TX, about 4 miles from the center point, averages 34.8 inches of precipitation a year, and snowfall there averages 0.0 inches. Rain tends to come in strong bursts separated by dry stretches, which is the pattern that drives the clay's swelling and shrinking.[3]
The station counts 31 days in a typical year with a low of 32 F or colder. The median last spring freeze is March 14, and the median first fall freeze is November 17. Spring planting can follow mid March, and beds can be mulched before mid November.[3]
Heat and long dry spells test a gravel surface as much as rain does. A packed base of crushed stone holds up in the heat, and a light top layer of clean stone does not turn to dust the way bare clay does.[3]
Short freezes still matter on wet clay. When a cold night follows a soaking rain, water held near the surface can freeze and lift loose stone. A surface that drains and a base with few fines near the top shrug off those nights with little damage.[1],[3]
Road Base or Crushed Stone for the Drive
Road Base carries the load on clay. It is crushed rock with a full range of sizes, so it compacts into a dense, hard layer that bridges small movements in the ground below. Laid on woven fabric over the Lewisville clay, it keeps the clay from pushing up into the stone.[1]
Crushed stone forms the finish. #57 Crushed Stone or 3/4" Crushed Stone gives a coarse, quick-draining surface, and Driveway Gravel packs a little tighter for easier walking. A thin top layer works better than a thick one, since deep loose stone rolls under tires.[1]
For extra support on soft spots, a bottom course of #4 Crushed Stone or 1-1/2" Crushed Gravel under the Road Base helps bridge wet clay. Crushed Concrete makes a firm, recycled option for the base layer on a work yard or a long drive.[1]
Where a drive meets a garage slab or a street, the joint is a weak point. Water collects along it and soaks into the clay below. Sloping the last stretch of stone away from the slab, and packing the base tight right up to the edge, keeps that seam dry and level.[1]
Edge the drive with steel, timber or a row of larger stone. As the clay below swells and shrinks, an edge keeps the base and the top stone from creeping out into the yard.[1]
Base thickness should match the traffic. A path carries little weight and needs only a modest layer, while a drive for trucks or a trailer pad needs more depth built in several compacted lifts. On clay that moves as much as the Lewisville soil at the center point, extra base depth buys a flatter surface over the years.[1]
Yards and Beds on Heavy Clay
Silty clay holds water and nutrients but packs hard and drains slowly at the surface. Raised beds filled with Garden Soil give roots a loose, fertile zone above the clay. In open beds, Compost mixed into the top layer breaks up the clay and helps water soak in.[1]
Mulch shades the clay and slows the drying that causes cracking. Brown Shredded Mulch, Red Mulch and Black Shredded Mulch knit into a layer that stays put in heavy rain, and Wood Chips suit paths and tree rings.[1]
Cracks that open in dry clay can also swallow mulch, soil and small stone. Watering beds deeply but less often keeps the clay from drying all the way out, and a fresh layer of Topsoil raked into a lawn after a dry spell fills those gaps so grass roots stay in contact with the ground.[1]
For low-water areas, Decomposed Granite and River Rock over fabric make tidy ground covers. Fill Dirt raises low spots before Topsoil goes on, and Playground Sand gives a soft, clean fill for a play area.[3]
Homes Here and in Greater Killeen
The Census counts 10,112 housing units in ZIP 76541. Detached single-family houses make up 41 percent, and owners live in 24 percent of the occupied homes. The median year built in the ZIP is 1971.[4]
Killeen as a whole counts 65,793 housing units, with 61 percent detached and a median year built of 1996. Rentals and older homes make up much of this ZIP, so frequent requests include patching worn gravel drives, refreshing parking strips and topping tired beds with fresh soil and mulch.[4]
TxDOT writes up Flexible Base under Item 247 in its Standard Specifications for Construction and Maintenance of Highways, Streets, and Bridges (2024). That compacted crushed course is how the state builds over moving clay, and the same approach keeps a home drive level.[5]

Frequently Asked Questions
Which gravel works on clay ground in Killeen?
Angular stone over a compacted base works best. At the center point of ZIP 76541 the survey maps Lewisville silty clay with a high shrink-swell rating. Lay woven fabric, compact Road Base, and finish with #57 Crushed Stone or Driveway Gravel. Edge the drive so the stone does not spread as the clay moves.
Why does my gravel drive crack and dip in summer?
The clay underneath shrinks as it dries and swells when it gets wet. The survey rates shrink-swell at the center point as high, 7.5 percent. A thicker compacted base of Road Base spreads that movement, and keeping water away from the edges limits how much the clay swings between wet and dry.
How do I stop runoff from washing out my yard?
The soil at the center point falls in hydrologic group C, so rain soaks in slowly and runs off in a hard storm. Shape surfaces so water leaves evenly, and give concentrated flow a lined path of River Rock or Drain Rock. Lead downspouts away from slabs and drives.
When should I plant in Killeen?
The NOAA station at Killeen records a median last spring freeze of March 14 and a median first fall freeze of November 17, with 31 days a year at 32 F or colder. Plant after mid March. In fall, add Compost to clay beds and top them with shredded mulch before mid November.
What goes under a shed or slab on swelling clay?
Strip the topsoil, lay woven fabric, and build a compacted pad of Road Base or Crushed Concrete a little above the yard. Keep gutters and downspouts emptying well away from the edge. A firm, raised pad spreads the load and stays drier, which limits how much the clay beneath it moves.
