The ground and weather in El Paso

A hardpan under gravelly alluvium

The defining fact at the center point of ZIP 79901 is a petrocalcic layer about 10 inches down. Petrocalcic means a horizon cemented by calcium carbonate, known locally as caliche. It is hard enough to stop a shovel and slow enough to drain that water sits on top of it after rain.[1]

That shallow hardpan shapes almost every project. Post holes, tree pits and drain trenches need a digging bar or a breaker, and planting holes that stop at the hardpan can hold water like a bucket. Breaking through the layer, or building up above it, is the only way to give roots room.[1]

For a drive or patio, the hardpan helps. It provides a firm, stable layer, so a base laid over it needs less depth than on soft ground, as long as water has a way off the surface.[1]

Above the hardpan, the USDA survey maps the Delnorte-Canutio association, undulating. Delnorte soil makes up 75 percent of the unit, and its top mineral layer is a very gravelly loam, rated well drained. Hydrologic group D applies, the class with very slow infiltration and high runoff.[1]

Shrink-swell is low, 1.5 percent by linear extensibility in the top 100 cm, so the soil itself does not move much. The high runoff rating comes from the cemented layer below, which stops water from soaking deeper.[1]

The geologic map shows Older alluvial deposits of Pleistocene age at the center point, made of coarse and fine alluvium. That old, stream-laid gravel explains the stony feel of the soil and the rounded cobbles that turn up in nearly every hole.[2]

Rare rain, fast runoff

The NOAA normals station at El Paso Intl AP, TX, about 7 miles away, averages 8.8 inches of precipitation and 2.8 inches of snowfall a year. Rain is scarce, but when a storm hits, water races off hard ground and pools wherever the hardpan holds it.[3]

El Paso Intl logs 42 days a year with a low of 32 F or colder. The median last spring freeze is March 2, and the median first fall freeze is November 20. Light frost rarely troubles a gravel base, but it can damage tender plants set out too early.[3]

Snow is light and short-lived at the airport station, but a cold snap can freeze water pooled on top of the hardpan, so drainage matters in winter as well.[1],[3]

Plan for the heavy storm. Slope every surface away from the house, line drainage paths with River Rock or Riprap, and keep low spots from collecting water against a wall or slab.[1],[3]

Desert yards, trees and shrubs

Rock and gravel suit a dry yard. Decomposed Granite makes firm paths and patios. River Rock fills dry creek beds and borders and handles storm runoff. Larger Riprap anchors slopes and drainage outlets, and Pea Gravel suits casual sitting areas.[3]

Lay a landscape fabric under decorative rock to keep weeds down and stop the stone from mixing into the gravelly soil. Run drip irrigation under the rock to reach plants without wetting the surface.[1]

Group plants by their water needs, so one drip zone serves shrubs and another serves trees, and cover the soil between them with rock rather than leaving it bare.[3]

For planted beds, imported Garden Soil or Topsoil blended with Compost gives roots more room and moisture than the thin native layer above the hardpan. Raised beds avoid digging into the caliche at all.[1]

Trees struggle where roots meet a cemented layer about 10 inches down. A wide planting hole, broken through the caliche in several places, lets roots and water move deeper. Backfill with native soil mixed with Compost, and build a shallow basin around the trunk so irrigation soaks in rather than running off.[1]

Surround new trees and shrubs with Wood Chips or Brown Shredded Mulch out to the drip line. In a dry, sunny climate, mulch keeps the root zone cooler and holds irrigation water near the surface where young roots can reach it.[3]

Building a drive over caliche

Clear loose soil and cobbles from the drive area and check how deep the hardpan sits across the footprint. Where it is close to the surface, it makes an excellent subgrade. Where it dips, fill the low spots with packed Road Base so the base thickness stays even.[1]

Pack Road Base in thin lifts, wetting each one lightly so the fines bind in the dry air. Finish with Driveway Gravel or 3/4" Crushed Stone, and give the surface a crown so storm water leaves quickly.[3]

Rounded cobbles from the old alluvium can be raked aside and reused as edging along the drive, or set into a drainage swale as a natural-looking lining.[2]

Asphalt Millings make another good drive surface in a hot climate. They bind under traffic and sun into a firm, dark layer that resists washing in a sudden storm.[3]

Patio surfaces, play areas and side yards

Each of these works under or as a patio surface, but the two behave differently. 3/4" Crushed Stone is angular and drains freely. It makes a solid base under pavers or a loose, crunchy surface for a casual patio.[1]

Stone Dust Screenings are fine and pack nearly as hard as concrete when wetted and tamped. They make a smooth setting bed for flagstone or a firm, level patio surface, though they shed water rather than drain it.[1]

On ground with a hardpan close below, a patio of Stone Dust Screenings needs a slight slope to shed rain. A patio of 3/4" Crushed Stone needs edging to stay in place but handles storm water better.[1]

Well-drained gravelly ground suits play and pet areas. Playground Sand makes a soft surface for children, and Pea Gravel in a dog run drains and rinses clean. Edge both with timber or steel so storm water and foot traffic do not spread them across the yard.[1]

Side yards and utility areas can take Stone Dust Screenings packed firm, which keep dust down and give a level surface for bins and equipment.[1]

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I dig through caliche for a tree?

Use a digging bar or a rented breaker to open a hole through the hardpan, then test it by filling it with water. If the water drains, plant there. If it sits, widen the hole or build a raised bed of Garden Soil and Topsoil above the layer.

Which gravel works on hard, rocky ground in El Paso?

A packed base of Road Base over the cleared ground, then Driveway Gravel or 3/4" Crushed Stone on top. The hardpan gives a firm subgrade, so focus on an even base and a crown that sheds storm water.

Is Decomposed Granite a good choice for desert paths?

Yes. Decomposed Granite packs into a firm, natural surface that suits desert plantings. Lay it over a packed base, wet and tamp it in layers, and add edging so it holds its shape when a storm comes through.

How do I keep water from pooling near my house?

Slope soil and gravel away from the walls and give runoff a path. Line a shallow channel with River Rock and put Riprap where water moves fastest. Avoid low spots next to slabs, since the hardpan below holds water there.

When should I plant in El Paso?

The NOAA station at El Paso Intl AP, TX puts the median last spring freeze on March 2 and the median first fall freeze on November 20. Plant tender plants after the spring date and mulch or rock around them right away.
