The ground and weather in Hammond
Drained muck at the center point
The USDA soil survey maps Adrian muck, drained, lake moderated warm, 0 to 1 percent slopes, at the ZIP's center point. Adrian makes up 75 percent of the map unit. Muck is soil made mostly of decayed plant matter, formed in a wet low spot over a long time. The word drained in the name means ditches or tile have lowered the water.[1]
The survey still rates Adrian very poorly drained. It sits in hydrologic group A/D, which means it acts like group D, with slow intake and high runoff, while the water table is high. Where the drainage works, it acts like group A and takes in water fast. The top mineral layer under the muck is sand.[1]
Muck is soft and compresses under weight. A base laid straight on top will sink unevenly over time. Shrink-swell in the top meter rates low, at 0.2 percent, so settling causes more trouble than swelling. On a slope of 0 to 1 percent, water has nowhere obvious to go, so it sits.[1]
Far below the soil, the geologic map shows the Wabash Formation at the center point, a Silurian unit of limestone and dolostone. That rock lies well beneath the reach of any home project. The ground at the center point stands 590 feet above sea level.[2],[3]
Building on soft, flat ground
Indiana's Department of Transportation builds roads over Compacted Aggregate, No. 53, under Section 301 Aggregate Base of the INDOT Standard Specifications 2026. A home drive needs that same compacted layer, and on muck it needs more preparation underneath.[4]
Dig out as much of the soft organic layer as the job allows, down toward the firmer sand. Lay a heavy woven fabric across the bottom of the cut. The fabric spreads the load and stops the stone from pushing down into the soft ground.[1]
Build up with a thick lower course of #4 Crushed Stone or 1-1/2" Crushed Gravel. Large, open stone bridges soft spots and lets water move through. Over that, compact Road Base in thin lifts, then add a thin top of 3/4" Crushed Stone. Raising the finished surface a little above the yard helps it stay dry.[1]
Expect some settling the first year on this ground. A fresh lift of Road Base and a new top layer after the first winter fills any dips that have formed. Crushed Concrete is a sturdy recycled choice for the lower layers.[1]
Snow and rain at the Park Forest gauge
The NOAA normals station at Park Forest, IL, about 14 miles away, gives the weather averages used here. It records 42.1 inches of precipitation and 28.2 inches of snow in an average year. On flat, wet ground, both rain and snowmelt tend to stand rather than drain.[5]
The Park Forest gauge counts 126 days a year with a low of 32 F or colder. The median last spring freeze is April 23, and the median first fall freeze is October 20. Water trapped in a base expands when it freezes, so a drive here needs open stone in its lower layer and a way for melt to escape.[5]
Plows and snow piles push stone around. Pile snow on the lawn side, away from the low edge of the drive, so the melt runs away from the base. Rake the top stone back into place in spring.[5]
Moving water off a flat lot
On level ground with a high water table, drainage depends on shaping the surface. Grade beds and lawns so they fall away from the house, even if only slightly. Fill Dirt or Topsoil can raise low areas so water moves toward the street or a drain.[1]
A French drain filled with Drain Rock or #57 Crushed Stone around a perforated pipe can carry water from a wet corner to an outlet. Wrap the stone in fabric so silt does not clog it. On very flat ground, the outlet must sit lower than the trench, or the water has nowhere to go.[1]
Sump pumps are common in older homes on low ground, and the water they push out needs a place to go. A pump that empties onto the lawn next to the house sends water straight back toward the foundation. Run the discharge line to a dry well or a long trench of Drain Rock several feet from the wall, and keep the outlet clear of snow in winter.[1],[5]
Under the drip line of a roof, a band of River Rock keeps falling water from splashing mud onto siding. Make sure the ground under it slopes away from the wall.[5]
Sand under the muck, and how to use it
The top mineral layer at the center point is sand, which sits below the organic muck. Sand drains well and compacts firmly, so it makes a far better footing than the muck above it. A job that can reach that sand has a real advantage.[1]
For a patio or a shed pad, dig out the soft layer until the spade meets firm sand, if the depth allows. Fill the hole back with compacted Road Base or Fill Sand in thin lifts. The new fill bears on the sand below and settles far less than a base laid on top of muck.[1]
Where the muck is too deep to remove, spread the load instead. Wide fabric, a thick layer of open stone and a compacted top layer act like a raft over the soft ground. Keep heavy vehicles off a new raft until it has gone through one wet season and any settling has shown itself.[1]
Fill Sand is also useful for leveling before a paver patio on this ground. It drains through and compacts well. Over it, a thin bed of Concrete Sand sets the pavers, and a solid edge keeps the sand from washing out at the sides.[1]
Older city homes in ZIP 46320
The Census counts 6,340 housing units in ZIP 46320. Detached single-family houses make up 53 percent, and owners live in 41 percent of the occupied homes. The median home in the ZIP was built in 1945.[6]
Hammond as a city has 32,877 housing units by the Census count. Across the city, 73 percent are detached houses, and the median build year is 1952. Homes of that age often have a garage on an alley, a narrow side yard and beds that have sunk below the lawn.[6]
Raised beds of Garden Soil, or Topsoil mixed with Compost, lift plant roots above wet ground. Shredded mulch on top keeps the soil from crusting. Plant after the median last spring freeze of April 23.[1],[5]

Frequently Asked Questions
What gravel works on wet muck ground in Hammond
Use large, open stone at the bottom and a compacted layer on top. Lay heavy fabric, then #4 Crushed Stone or 1-1/2" Crushed Gravel, then Road Base and a thin top of 3/4" Crushed Stone. The fabric keeps the stone from sinking into the muck.
Why does my gravel drive keep sinking
Soft organic ground compresses under weight, so a thin base settles into it over time. Dig out more of the soft layer, lay fabric and build a thicker base of open stone with compacted Road Base on top. Plan for a top-up after the first winter.
How do I drain a wet yard on flat ground
Shape the ground so it falls away from the house and toward a lower outlet. Raise low spots with Fill Dirt or Topsoil. For a stubborn wet area, a French drain of Drain Rock around a pipe can carry water to the street or a ditch, as long as the outlet sits lower.
What goes under a shed on soft ground
A pad of compacted Road Base over fabric spreads the shed's weight and keeps it level. Make the pad a little larger than the shed, and set it a bit higher than the yard around it so water drains away. A top layer of 3/4" Crushed Stone keeps the edges neat.
What soil is best for raised beds here
Garden Soil, or Topsoil mixed with Compost, gives roots a loose, fertile layer above the wet ground. Build the beds high enough that the roots stay out of standing water after rain. Cover them with shredded mulch to hold moisture in summer.
