The ground and weather in Saint Petersburg

Paved-over sand a few feet above the bay

Most of the land at the center point of ZIP 33701 is covered. The soil survey maps it as Urban land on 0 to 2 percent slopes and counts 85 percent of the unit as paved or built over. The Matlacha series, a soil formed in sandy fill, takes up just 3 percent.[1]

Where native soil peeks through, its top mineral layer is gravelly fine sand. The survey lists it as somewhat poorly drained and in hydrologic group B, which means water enters at a moderate pace until the shallow water table rises in the wet season and the sand fills up.[1]

Fine sand with so little clay hardly moves at all as it wets and dries. Shrink-swell in the top 100 cm is just 0.3 percent. The danger for paving here is not heave but washout, when storm water carries the sand out from under the edges of a patio or walk.[1]

Under the fill, the geologic map shows Undifferentiated sediments of Pleistocene age, a mix of sand, clay, silt, marl, peat and gravel. The ground at the center point stands 20 feet above sea level.[2],[3]

Fill on an old waterfront grid often holds shell, crushed rock and the odd chunk of old curb. Most of it packs well and can stay. Soft, black, organic pockets cannot, because they keep settling under a load long after the job is done.[1],[2]

Brick streets and old curbs are part of the local look, and some yards still hold old brick pavers under the sod. Those bricks can be lifted, cleaned and relaid over a fresh bed of compacted base and Concrete Sand.[1]

Warm and wet all year

Weather normals come from the NOAA station at ST Petersburg, about 1 mile away. It averages 52.5 inches of precipitation a year and 0.0 inches of snow. Heavy rain is the weather force that shapes outdoor work here.[4]

The station records 0 days a year with a low of 32 F or colder. With no frost to lift the ground, a stone base does not need extra depth for cold, and planting can go on in any month.[4]

Storms off the water can drop a lot of rain fast. On low, sandy ground near the shore, every hard surface should lead water somewhere it can soak in, such as a lawn, a bed or a strip of open stone.[3],[4]

Salt in the air near the shore can stress plants and wear on some materials. Stone, sand and gravel hold up to it without trouble, which is one reason rock gardens and gravel paths are so common in coastal yards.[4]

Heat and humidity run long here, and organic mulch breaks down fast. Beds may need a fresh layer every year, while stone ground covers keep their color and depth far longer with only an occasional rake.[4]

Choosing between Pea Gravel and crushed stone for a side yard

Narrow side yards between bungalows are a very common gravel job here. Pea Gravel is round, smooth and comfortable to walk on barefoot, and it looks soft and relaxed. Pea Gravel shifts underfoot and rolls when a wheelbarrow crosses it.[1]

3/8" Crushed Stone has sharp edges that lock together. It feels firmer and stays put better on a path that gets regular traffic, though it is less pleasant without shoes. For a side yard used mostly for walking to the back, crushed stone wins. For a sitting area, Pea Gravel wins.[1]

Either way, lay fabric over the sand first to stop weeds and keep the stone from sinking. Add edging along the house and the fence so the stone does not migrate into beds.[1]

For a parking strip, go heavier. Compact the sand, add a layer of Road Base or Crushed Concrete in thin lifts, and top it with 3/4" Crushed Stone. The open surface lets downpours soak through rather than running into the street.[1],[4]

Driveway ribbons, two strips of stone with grass or ground cover between them, suit older bungalow lots with narrow drives. Each strip gets a compacted base of Road Base and a top of 3/4" Crushed Stone, edged so the stone stays out of the middle strip.[1]

Garden walks through a tropical yard look good in Walkway Gravel or Pea Gravel set between stepping stones. The stones carry the foot traffic and the gravel fills the gaps.[1]

Gardens in sandy ground

Fine sand drains so fast that plants can wilt a day after a storm. Blending Compost or Garden Soil into the top layer helps the soil hold moisture. Raised beds filled with Garden Soil give vegetables a much better start.[1]

Mulch slows drying and keeps the soil cooler. Brown Shredded Mulch and Black Shredded Mulch work well, and Red Mulch adds color around palms and shrubs. Wood Chips are a good choice under trees.[4]

For new sod, rake a thin layer of Topsoil over the sand first. The finer soil keeps young roots moist while they grow down into the sand below.[1]

Where gutters pour onto sand, a splash pad of River Rock stops the water from digging a hole. A short trench of Drain Rock can lead it further into the yard.[1],[4]

Salt-tolerant beds near the water do better with a coarse mulch that does not hold too much moisture against stems. Brown Shredded Mulch or a ground cover of River Rock around tough coastal plants keeps beds tidy with little care.[1],[4]

Housing in ZIP 33701 against the city

ZIP 33701 has 13,642 housing units in Census counts. Detached single-family houses make up 20 percent of them, against 55 percent across St. Petersburg.[5]

The median home in the ZIP was built in 1975. For the city as a whole, the median is 1969. Owners live in 39 percent of the occupied homes in ZIP 33701, and St. Petersburg counts 141,508 housing units in all.[5]

Condo associations and shared buildings need material for common areas: a refresh of mulch in the beds, a new gravel path or Playground Sand for a play area. A single delivery can cover several of those jobs at once.[5]

Many single-family streets in the older parts of the city have alley access, and a gravel pad off the alley is a simple way to add parking. Compacted Road Base under 3/4" Crushed Stone, with an edge along the alley, holds up well and lets rain soak through.[5]

For state roads, the Florida Department of Transportation names Graded Aggregate Base under Section 204 of the Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction, FY 2026-27. It is a road specification. It describes a graded stone layer, compacted in lifts, that spreads traffic loads over sandy subgrade.[6]

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Pea Gravel or crushed stone better for a St. Petersburg side yard?

For a path that gets daily use, 3/8" Crushed Stone locks together and feels firmer. For a sitting area or a spot you walk barefoot, Pea Gravel is softer and more comfortable. Lay fabric under either one and add edging to keep it in place.

What goes under pavers on sand?

Compact the sand, then lay several thin lifts of Road Base, compacting each one. Screed a thin layer of Concrete Sand on top and set the pavers. A firm edge restraint keeps the pavers from spreading as storm water moves through the sand.

How do I keep sand from washing out under my patio?

Use a strong edge restraint, slope the patio away from the house, and give runoff a place to go, such as a strip of Drain Rock or a bed. The ST Petersburg station averages 52.5 inches of precipitation a year, so plan for heavy rain.

What sand should I use in a play area?

Playground Sand is washed and screened, so it is soft and clean for children. Set the play area slightly above the surrounding ground so rain drains out of the sand instead of pooling in it.

Which soil should I add to sandy beds?

Blend Compost or Garden Soil into the top layer of the sand to help it hold water and nutrients. For vegetables, raised beds filled with Garden Soil work best. Top the bed with shredded mulch to slow drying.
